Hashapass

Hashapass is an innovative service that generates a password for you based on one single password and an additional parameter. For example, if the password is “abc123″, you can put parameters such as “google”, “yahoo”, “twitter” and get unique passwords for each of those services. The point here is that you only need to remember one password, viz. abc123, and by just keying in the service name, you get the same unique password that you just copy paste and login.

I can’t begin to stress on how useful this is. For starters…

  • You get security by not having to use a common password across different websites.
  • You don’t have to remember more than one password.
  • You don’t need to rely on a downloadable piece of software such as KeePass or RoboForm or whatever.

There are some interesting ways in which I use Hashapass, which I’ll probably list down as tips here later on. One of them is the awesome bookmarklet I made for it.

The only problem with Hashapass is that you have to visit the site http://hashapass.com everytime you need to generate a password. This can get a little tedious, so I created a Firefox/Chrome bookmarklet that wraps the complete functionality of Hashapass. You have to simply click on the Hashapass bookmarklet in your toolbar (or wherever you choose to place it). It will ask you your master password, your parameter and give you your generated password, which you can cut or copy and paste into whichever website you want to log into. This bookmarklet has made my Hashapass-ing so much more convenient, I pat myself on the back every time I use it!

Install: coming soon (drag and drop this into your toolbar, bookmark it, or just click for a demo)
